In my home country in Japan, Besides Konmari method, there are many other Organizing / Decluttering methods.
This is one of them – it’s a cleaning philosophy from Japanese monk, Shokei Matsumoto.
I’m going to share Japanese Decluttering questions / advice to help you, when you declutter.
Japanese Decluttering Philosophy
Japanese Decluttering, it doesn’t mean you are throwing things away.
It’s the method of choosing what to keep.
1 ) Are you using it? Keep only what you are using.
The key is if you are using it NOW. Expect daily-consumable items such as kitchen papers, toilet papers …. do you really need them?
2 ) Not “Can you Use it”, but “Are you using it”
You think “one day I will use it” …. the day will not likely to come.
3) Use expensive stuff as soon as possible.
This can relate to me a lot. My parents in Japan sent me Japanese food. I ‘save’ them for special occasion because they are very special. Turns out, those food passes expiration date. USE it, or EAT it! That’s the BEST way to show appreciation.
4) Old make-up makes women old.
Old make-ups quality will be lower after about 3 years after you opened it. Bad quality make-up can cause skin damage.
5) Old lingeries make women unattractive.
Destroyed fabrics – that have holes, stretched, thin – because you’ve worn so long and so often, it’s time to stop using them. Your partners can notice that and honestly, they are just not sexy.
6) If you don’t use it for 3 years, you will never use it.
“One day I will use it” … you may think, but if you don’t use it in past 3 years, the chance you will use in the future is close to zero.
(This is a temple that I went to visit in Japan. Extreme minimalistic – doesn’t this make your feel fresh and clean?)
7) You have so many clothes, but you only wear certain numbers of clothes.
Do you really need to buy more clothes?
8) Take pictures so you can keep memories.
Some items may have memories in them, but you know you don’t need (or use) them anymore. The guilt can hold you back from declutter. In that case take some photos of it! Even videos. Save them digitally. That way you can always go back to see your memories.
9 ) Use Digital products instead of Papers.
Manual papers… tickets…. do they really need to be papers? Try to use digital products when you can.
10) Got samplers? Use them as fast as possible. Or better, don’t get them.
Samples are great because they are free. 😄 However they can be part of a hoarder house. ONLY get them if you are 100% sure you will use them. Otherwise, be brave and “No, Thank you”.
11) When you declutter or organize, start in the morning.
The reasons is that your mind, brain is the most fresh in the morning. With clear mindset, you can declutter better than evenings. That being said, be sure to sleep well long. If you are lack of sleep, it will be same bad result. Get some rest, sleep, declutter with fresh mind.
12 ) Empty boxes, plastic bags…. Do you really use them ALL ?
“I may use them later” again, the day won’t come. Toss them. Boxes take crazy a lot of space… they are garbage, do not stack them.
I hope this post helps you when you declutter 🙂
